Baby Bear Christmas

This pattern is for a Christmas Stocking that measures 23″ long and 7″ wide at the calf. It was knitted in plain white wool and can be decorated later by adding bells, pinecones, ribbons, idiot cords or duplicate stitch initials.

Materials:

2 skeins white Lopi yarn.
Needles: Size 6

Gauge:
9 st and 13 rows = 4 inches.

Note:
Work two strands wool together.
tbl = Through back of loops.

Directions:

Cast on 36 st. Using dp needles, k1, p1 ribbing.

Mark beg of row for the back. Continue ribbing for 11 rows. (3.5″) Work stockinette st 20 rows. (10.5″ from beg.) Instep dec next row starting at back marker.

Dec rnd: k10, k2tog, place marker, k16, k2tog, place marker, k10. (34 st) Continue stockinette st repeating dec rnd every 3rd row, 5 times. Dec 1 st before each marker. 13″ from beg. (28 st) Heel flap: (Starting at center of back)

K7, k14, place these 14 st on a holder (instep), k7. Remove side markers. Work stockinette on heel flap by k right side and p wrong side, 12 rows. (14 st) (5.75″ flap)

Heel turning:

Row 1: k5, k2tog tbl, k2tog tbl, k5. (12 st)
Row 2: p3, p2tog, p2, p2tog, p3. (10 st)
Row 3: k2, k2tog tbl, k2, k2tog tbl, k2. (8 st)
Row 4: p1, p2tog, p2, p2tog, p1. (6 st)
Row 5: k2, k2tog tbl, k2. (5 st)
Row 6: p across 5 st.

Gusset and foot:

K5 from heel, PU & k7 st for gusset, place marker, k14, from instep, place marker, PU & k7 st for gusset, place marker for beg of rnd. (33 st)

K to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, sl marker, k14 sts of instep, sl marker, k2tog tbl, k rem sts.

Next rnd, k rnd even.

Repeat these 2 rnds until 22 st remain, then knit 12 rows.

Shape toe:

K to first marker, sl marker, k2tog tbl, k to within 2 st of marker, k2tog, sl marker, k rem sts.

Next rnd, k even, then repeat these 2 rnds until 14 st remain. Place top 7 st on holder, place bottom 7 st on holder. Use Kitchner st to weave the toe closed.
